Zodiac Interface
ZODIAC is a redesign concept for the Soyuz space capsule console, aimed at modernizing the astronaut interface for enhanced clarity, functionality, and immersion. The project reimagines the analog-heavy setup into a sleek, digital environment with a clean, dark UI and a futuristic, high-contrast palette—tailored for extreme use cases like spaceflight.
Challenge
The original Soyuz interface was highly complex, analog, and densely packed, making usability and quick comprehension a challenge in high-stakes environments. The design needed to respect the functionality of the original hardware while drastically improving readability, interaction, and layout for modern missions.
Solution
I created a multi-screen console system that incorporates digital touchscreens with intuitive layouts, contextual controls, and visual hierarchies that adapt to each mission phase. The design was informed by extensive visual research into existing spacecraft UI and ergonomic principles for zero-gravity interaction. The system includes real-time feedback, navigation, and system health overviews, all while maintaining a cohesive and immersive aesthetic. We dedicated a special attention that those critical controls that require quick reactions where analogical and not only digital.
Result
The final deliverables included a full set of high-fidelity mockups that present the entire user flow—from startup diagnostics to mission control screens. The ZODIAC console design was showcased through photorealistic renders, highlighting usability in a space context. The outcome is a future-facing vision of spaceflight interfaces that blends clarity, control, and visual sophistication.
